About NCAW

The NCAW is a single resource where you can find links to:

Developed at the University of Michigan's Center for the Education of Women, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the National Clearinghouse on Academic Worklife contains resources for researchers, administrators, faculty, and others interested in academia and work.

NCAW includes selected resources on all aspects of academic work and related issues: faculty careers, including tenure track and non tenure track faculty, benefits, climate and satisfaction, flexibility and work/life balance, policy development and policies that affect faculty, graduate students as future faculty, administrators' concerns, and more.

Articles

NCAW researchers and information specialists searched for relevant articles published since 2000 for inclusion in the database. We conducted literature searches in the areas of higher education, public policy, economics, human resources, business and psychology. Both online and print articles are included, from research and more popular sources. The NCAW includes direct links to some articles; many articles may be accessed through the library resources of your home institution.

Research & policy reports

Think tanks, advocacy and policy organizations, professional associations, and research units at universities generate online and printed reports on subjects relevant to academic worklife. We used literature searches as well as the resources available at the University of Michigan to identify relevant reports for inclusion in the NCAW. Most reports are dated after 2000.

Policies

In creating the NCAW, researchers and information specialists included model policies from a variety of institutions of higher education collected as part of research projects conducted at the UM Center for the Education of Women. Because policies are often difficult to find on the websites of institutions of higher education, we encourage the academic worklife clearinghouse community to submit examples of relevant policies from their institutions.

Demographics

Government statistics, findings from research surveys, and demographics from organizations and associations are included in the database.

Additional websites

In addition to the links to specific reports and papers online, the database of the NCAW includes links to entire websites that offer a broad range of relevant resources. the Related Links section of the NCAW also provides an extensive list of web links to sites related to NCAW topics that researchers thought would be of interest to Clearinghouse users.

Narratives on institutional policy change

One purpose of the NCAW is to encourage discussion on a variety of issues related to the academic workforce. We anticipate that this community section of the clearinghouse will facilitate the sharing of narratives regarding policy and practice changes and implementation at individual institutions in addition to providing a means of communication and discussion across the community.
